In 2009 and 2010, NJPRO was fortunate enough to investigate some of the buildings at Snug Harbor. We were also lucky enough to take part in the first ever “Historical Hauntings Snug Harbor Paranormal Adventure” in 2010. Snug Harbor has become so well known for it’s paranormal activity, that in 2011 it was featured on a well known paranormal TV show. Below is a brief history of Snug Harbor, as well as links to some of the interesting things we caught here.
In the early 19th century, Robert Richard Randall, created Sailors’ Snug Harbor as a “haven for aged, decrepit and worn out sailors.” Over the next century, Snug Harbor expanded to 50 structures and 900 residents from every corner of the world. By the turn of the 20th century, Snug Harbor was the richest charitable institution in the United States.
Sadly, the institution experienced financial difficulties in the mid-20th century, as residents dwindled and financial pressures multiplied. As a result, the once grand structures fell into disrepair and some were demolished. In the 1960’s, the newly formed New York City Landmarks Commission stepped forward to save the remaining buildings, designating them as New York City’s first landmark structures, and listing them on the National Register of Historic Places. Now a bustling cultural center, Snug Harbor has been revitalized with life, history and art… Some may even tell you it’s buzzing in another way as well. The rich history of this location leads many to believe that it’s haunted.
